Prudence Flashcards
Christian: “ Indeed, for they (simple and sloth) slept a little out of the way… Above all I found it hard work to get up this hill. Now I thank God I be here, and I thank you for receiving me.”
“Do you not think sometimes of the country whence you come?”
Christian: “Yes but with much detestation. Now I desire a better country”
“Do you not bear away with you some of the things of that land?”
Christian: “ Ay, but greatly against my will,…. But when I would be doing that which is best, that which is worse is with me.”
“Do you not find sometimes as if those things were vanquished?”
Christian: “Yes, but that is seldom.”
“Can you remember by what means you find your annoyance thus seems removed?”
Piety: “But why came they not?”
Christian: “ My wife was afraid of… This I can say: I was very wary of giving them pretext to not come on pilgrimage.”
“Indeed, Cain hated his brother because his own works were evil, and his brother’s were righteous. Thou hast delivered thy soul of their blood.”
Charity: “Here Is recorded the acts that He has done, and the names of many hundreds that He had taken into His service.”
“He placed them in such a habitations that could neither by length of days nor decays of nature be dissolved.”
Piety: “Here we may read of the worthy acts that some of His servants have done:… And turned to fight the armies of aliens.”
“Here are many histories of famous things, both ancient and modern, together with prophecies of things that taken their certain accomplishment, both to the dread and amazement of enemies, and the comfort and solace of pilgrims.”
Charity: “In this hall are some of the engines with which some of His servants did wonderful things. This is Moses’s rod”
“These are the pitchers, trumpets, and lamps with which Gideon put to fight the armies of Midian.”
Charity: “Here is the jaw-bone with which Samson did such mighty feats.”
“This is the sling and stone with which David slew Goliath of Gath”
Piety: “There is enough of this harness to outfit as many men for the service of their Lord as there be stars in heaven.”
“Now we must select a harness for you, Christian, of proof from head to foot, lest you meet with assaults in the way. Sword!”
Piety: “Sword!”
“Shield!”
Piety: “Shield.”
“Helmet!”
Piety: “Helmet.”
“Breastplate!”
Christian: “what is the name of this country?”
“Emmanuel’s Land. It is common ground to and for pilgrims.”
Christian: “As it was difficult coming up, so, so far as I can see it is dangerous going down.”
“Yes, so it is, for it is a hard matter for a man to go down into the Valley of Humiliation, as thou dost now, and catch no slip by the way.”
