What are the characteristics of proximal myopathy?
A
- muscle weakness
- muscle atrophy
- symmetrical
- tone normal or reduced
- reflexes normal or reduced
- malaise / fatigue

What are the causes of proximal myopathy?
A
Weakness over days:
- dermatomyositis
- rhabdomyolysis
Develops over weeks:
- Polymyositis
- steroid myopathy
- endocrine causes e.g. hyper or hypo thyroid.

What are the screening questions for proximal myopathy?
A
- any difficulty combing hair or climbing stairs?
- difficulty getting out of bathtup / rising from chair.

How can you tell if it is a neuropathy or myopathy?
A
Neuropathy:
- rapid onset
- parasthesia
- bladder problems
Myopathy
- gradual onset
- dystrophy
- preserved tendon reflex

what inv are done for proximal myopathy/
A
- Creatine kinase
- U&Es
- Ca2+ , Mg2+
- serum myoglobin
- FBC
- ESR / CRP
- thyroid function
- Aspartate aminotransferase levels

How is proximal myopathy managed?
A
Physio therapy
- treat hyperkalaemia
- treat thyroid
