Proximal lower limb Flashcards
What are the 3 compartments of the thigh?
Anterior
Medial
Posterior
What muscles make up the anterior thigh compartment?
Quadriceps femoris - 4 individual muscles that unite and attach to the patella via the quadriceps tendon
Vastus medialis
Vastus intermedius
Vastus lateralis
Rectus femoris
Sartorius
Pectineus
What is the blood + nerve supply of the anterior thigh?
Femoral artery
Femoral nerve
What is the common function of the anterior thigh muscles?
Knee extensors
Psoas major + iliacus = hip + thigh flexion
What is the pectineus ?
Transitional muscle between the medial and anterior compartments
Innervated by femoral and obturator nerve
Responsible for flexion of the hip and adduction of the thigh
What are the muscles of the medial thigh?
Adductor longus Adductor brevis Adductor magnus Obturator internus Gracialis
What is the blood + nerve supply of the medial thigh?
Obturator nerve
Obturator artery
What is the common function of the medial thigh muscles?
Thigh adductors
What are the muscles of the posterior thigh?
Hamstrings
- Biceps femoris has two heads
- semimembranosus
- semitendinosus
What is the blood + nerve supply of the posterior thigh?
common femoral artery, profunda femoris artery and superficial femoral artery
Sciatic nerve
What is the common function of the posterior thigh muscles?
Knee flexion + hip extension
What are the muscles of the gluteal region?
Gluteus maximus
Gluteus medius
Gluteus minimus
What is the nerve and blood supply to the gluteal muscles?
Superior and inferior gluteal arteries
Gluteus maximus - inferior gluteal nerve
Gluteus medius - superior gluteal nerve
Gluteus minimus - superior gluteal nerve
What is the common function of the gluteal muscles?
Abduct and extend the thigh
