Functions of a Provisional Restoration
A
- Provides esthetics, phonetics and masticatory function
- Protects the prepared tooth from fracture
- Protects the pulp from thermal and chemicals
- Maintains the health of the periodontium, should not be overhang or improper margins
- Maintains proximal contact and occlusal relations
- Previews of the final restoration
- Space maintenance - to prevent tilting of adjacent teeth + over eruption of opposing teeth
- Patient comfort

Requirements of Ideal Provisional Restorations
A
- Reasonably esthetic appearance
- Biocompatibility (nonirritant to pulp and soft tissue)
- Easily fabricated in short time
- Easily modified and repair
- Capable to receive high polish
- Dimensional stability
- Adequate strength to withstand force of mastication
