• during the Kornilov coup, the govt effectively armed the bolsheviks red army to defend them from kornilov’s forces. they were able to do so easily and thus gained extreme popularity and also the access to arms
• by october, the bolsheviks had a membership of 200,000 and a force of 10,000 armed red guards

• they wanted to wait until the constituent assembly was elected to sort the problem of the land. people in the countryside were taking land for themselves and there was effectively anarchy.
• in the cities, food supplies were volatile, real wages fell and prices rose.

• the rise of the bolsheviks and their promise of peace, land and bread made many people switch their support
