Protozoans Flashcards
What are the two main stages of the protozoan life cycle?
tophozoites - active feeding stage; asexual reproduction
cysts (inactive) or oocysts (products of sexual reproduction)
How do protozoans replicate?
asexual (binary or multiple fission) AND sexual reproduction
Malaria Protozoa (MR, MT)
MR = humans
MT = female mosquito bites (anapheles)
Malaria Protozoa (S&S, Comps)
S&S = fever/chills, diaphoresis, resp distress, diarrhea
Comps = shock, renal/liver failure, pulm/cerebral edema, coma, death
Giardiasis Protozoa (MR, MT)
MR = humans, maybe other animals
MT = ingestion of cysts (fecal-contaminated water, contaminated fingers/objects, anal-oral sexual contact)
Giardiasis Protozoa (S&S)
chronic diarrhea, abd cramps, bloating, loose/greasy stools, fatigue, weight loss
Giardiasis Protozoa (treatment)
rehydration therapy; antibiotics
Cryptosporidiosis Protozoa (MR, MT)
MR = humans, cattle, domestic animals
MT = self-infection, ingestion of oocysts, contaminated food/water, anal-oral sexual contact
Cryptosporidiosis Protozoa (S&S)
profuse/watery diarrhea, abd cramps, malaise, fever, anorexia, vomiting
Cryptosporidiosis Protozoa (treatment)
rehydration therapy; antibiotics
Toxoplasmosis Protozoa (MR, MT)
MR = cats, felines
MT = ingestion of oocysts from cat feces; ingestion of contaminated water, undercooked, or raw meat; transplacental infection (congenital)
Congenital Toxoplasmosis
miscarriage
physical/developmental damage
birth defects
death
Toxoplasmosis Protozoa (S&S)
fever, cerebritis, pneumonia, myocarditis
Toxoplasmosis (treatment)
antibiotics
Trichomoniasis Protozoa (MR, MT)
MR = humans
MT = intercourse
