Babesia bigemina (Cattle)
Babesia canis (Canine)
Common coccidian found in dogs and cats. Very small oocysts are found in stool sample. Can cause diarrhea, especially in puppies and kittens. Often is not treated in adult animals, as they serve little harm to the host
Cystoisospora spp
Zoonotic coccidian protozoa that can produce severe diarrhea is not treated
Cryptosporidium
Intestinal coccidian of cats that can affect pregnant women
Toxoplasma Gondii
Most common in young dogs and cats that are housed together in shelters. Treated with an antibiotic, and usually requires cleaning of area very thoroughly to prevent re-infection.
Giardia
**Trophozoite and Cyst form
Intracellular, malaria-like parasites affecting dogs
Blood forms – found in leukocytes
Hepatozoon canis and Hepatozoon americanum
A group of obligate intracellular gram-negative bacteria
Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Wolbachia, and Neorickettsia
