Protozoa Flashcards
What are Protozoa?
Single celled organisms
Are they prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic
How are they grouped?
On how they move
What are the 4 groups?
Amoebas, Flagellates, Ciliates, Sporozoans
What are Amoebas?
They are organisms which push out cytoplasm in one area and retract it from another.
Where are Amoebas generally found?
They are abundant in both fresh and salt water - some cause disease.
What are Flagellates?
Group of organisms characterised by the possession of at least flagellum.
What is a flagellum?
A whip like structure that is used for movement.
The organism is propelled as the flagellum beats back and forwards.
What are Ciliates?
Organism with hair like cilia that cover it
How do ciliates move?
Cilia beat in a coordinated way that enables movement
What are sporozoans?
Non-motile parasite with complex lifecycle involving sexual and asexual phases.
Transmission from host to host by various species of insect.
Name a type of amoeba?
Entamoeba Histolytica - a infection of the large intestine
Name a type of Flagellates?
Guardia lamblia - with symptoms such as diarrhea (water and nutrient loss) and painful abdominal cramps.
Name a type of Ciliates?
Balantidium coli is an intestinal protozoan parasite cause by the ingesting of infective cysts from food and water that is contaminated by faeces.
Name a type of Sporozoan?
Plasmodium Malariae - disease is commonly transmitted by infected female mosquito.
