Protozoa Flashcards
What is Giardiasis caused by?
Giardia lamblia
What is the site of action in Giardiasis?
small intestine
What is the mechanism of action in Giardiasis?
ingest cysts in water, not killed by normal chlorination
Which substances are used to treat Giardiasis?
Metronidazole or nitazoxanide
Which geographic area is Giardiasis common in?
Ubiquitous, campers, ski resorts, dogs, wild animals, eps. beavers
Which organism causes amebiasis?
Entamoeba histolytica
What is the site of infection of amebiasis?
colon, liver or other organs
How does amebiasis spread?
Ingest cysts from fecal contamination of water or food, oral/anal behaviors
How do we treat amebiasis?
With Iodoquinol or paromomycin
Where is amebiasis common?
Worldwide, wherever fecal contamination occurs
What is cryptosporiasis caused by?
Cryptosporidium (sporozoa)
What is the site of infection of cyrptosporiasis?
Small intestine, respiratory tract
What is the mechanism of infection of cryptosporiasis?
ingest oocysts, fecal contamination
How do we treat cryptosporiasis?
Nitazoxanide for immunocompetent
How is cryptosporiasis spread?
ubiquitous, esp in cattle raising areas
What is cyclosporiasis caused by?
Cyclospora
What is the site of infection of cyclosporiasis?
Small intestine
What is the mechanism of infection of cyclosporiasis?
Oocysts from fecal contamination of water, fresh produce

Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole
Where is cyclosporiasis common?
worldwide, tropics; subtropics
Name some intestinal parazoa?
Entamoeba histolytica, cyclospora, cryptosporidium, Giarda lamblia
Give any sexually transmitted protozoan disease?
Trichomoniasis
What is trichomoniasis caused by?
Trichomonas vaginalis
What is the site of infection of trichomoniasis?
vagina in females, asymptomatic in males
What is the mechanism of infection of trichomoniasis?
trophozoites are spread by sexual intercourse from person to person
What is the treatment for trichomoniasis?
Metronidazole for both partners
Where is trichomoniasis common?
Ubiquitous in sexually active populations
Give some blood and tissue flagellates diseases?
East African trypanosomiasis, West African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis,
What causes East African trypanosomiasis?
Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense
What is the site of infection of east and west African sleeping sickness?
blood, lymph
What is the mechanism of infection of both types of sleeping sickness?
tstetse bite lacerates the skin and releases trypomastigotes
What is the treatment for East African Trypanosomiasis?
early hemolytic stage Suramin, late CNS stage Melarsoprol
What is the treatment for West African Trypanosomiasis?
Pentamide in hemolytic stage, Eflornithine in late CNS stage
What causes Chagas disease?
Trypanosome cruzi
What is the site of infection of chagas disease?
amastigotes intracellular, heart, parasympathetic ganglia
What is the mechanism of infection of chagas disease?
Kissing bug feces rubbed into eye. blood transfusion, transplacental transmission
What is the treatment given for chagas disease?
Benznidazole
What causes the cutaneous leishmaniasis?
Leishmania major, leishmania tropica
What is the site of infection for cutaneous leishmaniasis?
skin, rolled edge ulceration
What is the mechanism of infection of cutaneous leishmaniasis?
sandfly injects promastigotes, amastigotes in macrophages, moncytes
What is the treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis?
stibogluconate sodium, meglumine antimonate, pentamidine
