Protons Flashcards
1
Q
What is a hadron
A
A heavily charged particle - a proton
2
Q
What is a cyclotron
A
Used to accelerated charged particles like protons with the help of an oscillating electric field.
3
Q
How does a cyclotron work
A
- Charged particles are injected into the center of the cyclotron, where there is a strong magnetic field.
- The magnetic field causes the particles to move in a circular path
- As the particles move, they pass through a gap between two hollow “D”-shaped electrodes
- Alternating electric fields between the dees accelerate the particles each time they cross the gap.
- The particles gain energy with each revolution until they reach the desired speed.
- Once the particles reach the desired energy level, they are extracted from the cyclotron and directed toward a target for various applications
This process allows for the production of high-energy particle beams for a range of scientific and industrial purposes.

Q
What is the time to reach the gap in a cyclotron dependant on?
