indication of PPIs?
peptic ulcers, dyspepsia and GORD.
MOA of PPIs?
work by supressing gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the hyrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphate (proton pump) enzyme syste, on the apical membrane of the gastric parietal cells. The block of the final production of HCL decreases stomach acid levels.
contraindication of PPI’s?
known allergy to drug
names of PPI’s?
“prazoles”: esomeprazole, lansoprazole. omeprazole, rabeprazole
side effects of PPI’s?
abdominal pain; constipation; diarrhoea; flatulence, GI disturbances; headaches; N&V.
what are the monitoring requirements of PPIs?
measurement of serum-magnesium concentrations should be considered before prolonged treatment with a PPI, specifically when used alongside drugs that can cause hypomagensaemia/ with digoxin.
