HTTP
HyperText Transfer protocol - Controls the transmission of web pages and associated material (such as images) across the internet
FTP
File Transfer Protocol - Allows the transfer of files across the internet; typically used when uploading files to a web server to make a website
SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - Directs email message from server to server over the internet
TCP/IP
Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol - Not a single protocol, but a suite of protocols that control exactly how data is broken down for transmission from sender to receiver, across a network.
IMAP
Internet Message Access Protocol - Once SMTP has directed an email to the correct server, IMAP allows it to be retrieved on a device such as a computer
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - This protocol ensures rthat eachdevice connected to a network has a unique index, known as an IP address
UDP
User Datagram Protocol - Sends data across the internet at a fast speed, as no checking takes place to confirm that data was correctly received.
What are standards?
A standard is a set of specifications for hardware or software, agreed upon by academic and industry contributors.
