Protists and Fungi - Diseases, Symptoms and Cures Flashcards
What are fungi?
Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that can be unicellular (e.g. yeast), or multicellular (e.g. mushrooms).
What are protists (protoctists)?
Protists (protoctists) are eukaryotic organisms, and are mostly unicellular.
What type of organism causes the disease ‘rose black spot’?
Fungi.
What are the symptoms of the disease ‘rose black spot’?
- Purple or black spots develop on the leaves, which then turn yellow and drop off early.
- It also affects the growth of the plant as photosynthesis is reduced.
How is rose black spot spread?
It is spread in the environment by water or wind.
How is rose black spot treated?
- Use of fungicides to kill the pathogens.
- Removing and destroying the affected leaves.
What type of organism causes malaria?
Protists.
What are the symptoms of malaria?
Recurrent episodes of fever (feeling hot and cold). In some cases it can be fatal.
How is malaria spread?
It is spread from animal to animal by mosquitos, as they feed on the animals.
The malarial protist spends part of its life cycle in mosquitos, and part in the bloodstream of other animals.
How can the spread of malaria be reduced?
- Kill the mosquito (which are transmitting it) by using insecticides.
2.,Destroy the mosquito breeding sites.
- Prevent getting bitten by mosquitoes by using insect repellents, or bed nets.
