Protists Flashcards
what are protists?
diverse eukaryotic organisms that are not plants, animals, or fungi
where are protists found?
aquatic and moist environments
Monophyletic
A group that includes a common ancestor and all of its descendants.
Paraphyletic
A group that includes a common ancestor and some, but not all, of its descendants.
- Leaves out at least one descendant group.
- ex.) Reptiles—this group excludes birds, even though they share a common ancestor with reptiles.
Polyphyletic
A group that does not include the most recent common ancestor of all its members.
are protists monophyletic?
no, they are paraphyletic, they include all eukaryotes except land plants, fungi, and animals.
What features define eukaryotes?
internal compartments, cytoskeleton, nuclear envelope, mitochondria, and chloroplast. they organize more.
How did mitochondria evolve?
What is the significance of ENDOSYMBIOSIS?
It explains the origin of MITOCHONDRIA and CHLOROPLASTS, which are essential for eukaryotic complexity.
What evidence supports the endosymbiosis theory for mitochondria?
Double membranes, CIRCULAR DNA, division by FISSION, and bacterial-like RIBOSOMES.
How did CHLOROPLASTS evolve?
