Protist, plant, fungi Flashcards
Protist
Any eukaryotic organism that is not an animal, plant or fungus.
Heterotroph
An organism that ingests or absorbs organic carbon in order to be able to produce energy and synthesize compounds to maintain its life.
Eukaryote
any organism whose cells have a cell nucleus and other organelles enclosed within membranes.
Decomposer
Decomposers are organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms, and in doing so, they carry out the natural process of decomposition.
Parasite
an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species, known as the host, from the body of which it obtains nutriment.
Host
an animal or plant on or in which a parasite or commensal organism lives.
Fungi
any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds,
Spore
a rounded resistant form adopted by a bacterial cell in adverse conditions.
Lichen
a mass of fungal and algal cells.
Nonvascular Plant
the 3 groups of plants that lack specialized conducting tissues.
vascular plant
a plant that has specialized tissues.
gymnosperm
a woody, vascular seed plant whose seeds are not enclosed by a fruit.
angiosperm
a flowering plant that produces seeds within a fruit.
photosynthisis
when plants, algae, and bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and and water to make food,
cellular respiration
when cells use oxygen to produce energy from food.
