Q

Plant like protists

A
  • euglena
  • both autotrophic and hetertrophic

Diatoms
* have shells made up silica glass

Q

Things that make up animals like protists

A

Ciliates
Ex) paramecium
-have cilia to aid movement
-have micronuclei that controls reproduction
- contractile vacuole that squeezes to get rid of water

Flagellates
- have one or more flagella for movement
Ex) euglena

Pseudopodians
- move using pseudopod is (fake feet)
Example amebas

Sporozoans

  • do not move on their own; move along with host
  • can occasionally move in gamete stages
  • ALL are parasitic

Q

Example of parasitic protists

A

Malaria

  • caused by protists plasmodium falciparum
  • transmitted by mosquitoes
  • protists lives inside bloodstream

Amoebic dysentery (motezumas revenge)

  • caused by protists Entamoeba histolytica
  • transmitted through contaminated food and water
  • diareah

African sleeping sickness
- caused by protists trypanosome brucei (tse tse fly)

Cryptosporidium

  • Caused by protists cryptosporidium parfumerie
  • responsible for a major health crisis in Detroit when the city’s drinking water was contaminated
