Protestant Reformation

Catholic Reformation
The movement for the reform of the Catholic Church in the 16th century. It included a revived papacy; the regeneration of old religious orders and the founding of new ones, most notably the Jesuits; and the reaffirmation of traditional Catholic doctrine at the Council of Trent.
Christian Humanism
An intellectual movement in northern Europe in the late 15th and early 16th centuries that combined the interests in the classics of the Italian Renaissance with an interest in the sources of early Christianity, including the New Testament and the writings of the church fathers.
Erasmus
A Dutch philosopher and Catholic theologian who is considered one of the greatest scholars of the northern Renaissance. As a Catholic priest, he was an important figure in classical scholarship who wrote in a pure Latin style.
Thomas More
An English lawyer, judge, social philosopher, author, statesman, and noted Renaissance humanist. He also served Henry VIII as Lord High Chancellor of England from October 1529 to May 1532.
Martin Luther
A German professor of theology, priest, author, composer, former Augustinian monk, and is best known as a seminal figure in the Protestant Reformation and as the namesake of Lutheranism. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1507.
John Calvin
A French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a Protestant, but believed that your salvation is predetermined at birth.
Anabaptists
A Christian movement which traces its origins to the Radical Reformation. The movement is commonly understood to be an offshoot of Protestantism, though this view is not shared by Anabaptists, who view themselves as a separate branch of Christianity.
Henry VIII
Henry VIII was King of England from 22 April 1509 until his death in 1547. Henry is best known for his six marriages, including his efforts to have his first marriage annulled.
Mary I
The Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 until her death in 1558. She is best known for her vigorous attempt to reverse the English Reformation, which had begun during the reign of her father, Henry VIII.
Elizabeth I
The Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603, she was also known as the Virgin Queen. She was the second daughter of Henry VIII and was a Protestant who began working with Parliament to equate the power.
Wars of Religion
Wars in France that took place between 1562 and 1598 between the Catholic and Protestant beliefs.
