What happened in 1509?
Henry VIII becomes king after the death of his father. He marries Catherine of Atagon, the widow of his brother Arthur Sindelar 😳.
What happened in 1517?
Martin Luther nails ‘The 95 theses’ to the church door in Wittenberg, starting European Reformation and Protestantism.
What happened in 1524-1531?
Religious wars break out in Germany and Switzerland between Protestants and thise who want to defend the Catholic Church.
What happened in 1534?
Henry makes the Act of Supremacy which declares him as the head of the new Protestant Church of England and he breaks with the Catholic Church.
What happened in 1536?
Henry begins to close down and destroy monasteries (buildings occupied by monks, nuns). By 1540, all were closed.
What happened in 1547-1552
King Edward VI introduces new changes to the English Church, making it more Protestant.
What happened in 1553?
King Edward VI dies and Lady Jane Grey is proclaimed queen but loses support after only 9 days. Mary then becomes queen.
What happened in 1553-1558?
Mary reintroduces Catholicism. 300 people are burned for refusing to accept the changes.
What happened in 1588?
Mary dies but she has no children with her husband Phillip II of Spain so succession was given to Mary’s half sister Elizabeth.
What happened in 1558-1559?
Elizabeth tries to be fair by keeping some Catholic and Protestant traditions.
What happened in 1568?
Dutch Protestants rebel against the rule of Catholic spain beginning a struggle that lasts for 8 decades. Elizabeth is pressured to intervene.
What happened in 1587?
Elizabeth feels increasingly threatened by Mary who is a Catholic rival to the throne; after years of imprisonment, Mary is beheaded.
What happened in 1588?
The Spanish attempt to invade English (The Spanish Armada). The invasion fails.
What happened in 1547?
Henry VIII died.👺
