Proteomics Flashcards
What is proteomics
The study of structure, function and interactions of the proteins directing the activities of each living cell
What are proteins
Large and complex molecules made up of long chains of amino acids
What is the proteome
Entire set of of proteins expressed by a genome, cell tissue or organism at a certain time
How does one gene make different proteins
Alternative slicing
Post translational modification
Proteins interact with each other in complex pathways to change function
How can proteomics be used in medicine
Can be used in the discovery, diagnostic and molecular medicine. (Link between genes, proteins and disease)
Explain gene expression
All genes are expressed differently (some all the time and others during stages of development)
