Proteins In Health Flashcards
What is bradykinin?
Bradykinin is a vasodilation plasma kinin consisting of nine linked amino acids. It is a bronchoconstrictor, increases the permeability of capillaries, and stimulates the release of antidiuretic hormone.
What is kinin?
Kinin is a general term for a group of polypeptides that have considerable biological activity. They are capable of influencing smooth muscle contraction, inducing hypotension, increase blood flow and permeability (vasodilation) of small blood capillaries, and inciting pain.
What is granzyme?
Granzyme refers to any of a family of proteases stored in the granules of cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Granzymes are involved in cytolytic functions.
What is endothelin?
Endothelin refers to any of the peptides released from the lining of the blood vessels that causes blood vessels to constrict and blood pressure to increase. Endothelins are one of several agents involved in raising blood pressure.
What is transforming growth factor (TGF)?
Transforming growth factor (TGF) is a polypeptide cytokine with multiple functions that binds to epidermal growth factor receptors. It blocks T lymphocytes from entering tumors (suppressing the immune response to cancer), promotes the growth of fibroblasts, and has numerous other physiological functions.
What is platelet-derived growth factor?
Platelet-derived growth factor is a polypeptide that stimulates collagen synthesis, smooth muscle formation, tissue repair, and the proliferation of fibroblasts and microglia.
What is glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)?
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme that dehydrogenates glucose-6-phosphate to form 6-phospho-D-glucono-lactone. This is the initial step in the pentose phosphate pathway of glucose catabolism.
What is ferritin?
Ferritin is an iron-phosphorusprotein complex containing about 23% iron. It is formed in the intestinal mucosa by the union of ferric iron with a protein, apoferritin. Tissues store iron in this form, principally in the reticuloendothelial cells of the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.
What is transferrin?
Transferrin is a globulin that binds and transports iron.
