Proteins Flashcards
1
Q
Monomer of proteins
A
amino acids
2
Q
Structure of amino acid
A
NH2 = Amine group COOH = carboxyl group R = Side chain H = Hydrogen
3
Q
What bond is formed between two amino acids?
A
- Peptide bond
- Dipeptide formed between two amino acids
- Polypeptide formed between many amino acids
4
Q
Functional protein
A
contain one or more polypeptides
5
Q
Primary Structure
A
- amino acid monomers join together through polymerisation
- the resulting chain is a polypeptide
6
Q
Secondary Structure
A
- Hydrogen on the NH group and the oxygen on the C==O group readily form weak bonds called hydrogen bonds
- This cause it to twist into an alpha helix.
7
Q
Tertiary Structure
A
This structure can be twisted even more to make a 3d shape with disulphide bridges, ionic bonds and hydrogen bonds.
8
Q
Quaternary Structure
A
A non-protein group may be present such as an iron-containing haem group in haemoglobin.
9
Q
Test to identify proteins
A
Biuret Test
