Proteins Flashcards
Proteins act as what?
Structural components of tissues and muscles , hormones, antibodies, catalysts.
What are protein molecules made from?
Long chains of amino acids, in specific 3D shapes
Enzymes are what?
Biological catalysts made from proteins,
Catalysts are what?
Chemical substance that increase the rate of chemical reactions with changing itself
What are amylases?
Produced in salivary glands, digesting starch, and produces sugars in the mouth and small intestine
Proteases do what?
Produced in the stomach , pancreas and small intestine, digesting proteins, and producing amino acids
Lipase does what?
Produced in pancreas and small intestines, digests lipids( fats and oils) , produces fatty acids and glycerol In small intestines
Enzymes are used in what?
Biological detergents and in proteases, carbohydrases, and isomerases
Carbohydrases do what?
Convert starch into sugar syrup
Isomerases do what?
Convert glucose syrup into fructose syrup
Aerobic respiration is?
Respiration that uses oxygen
Aerobic respiration takes place in humans and animals?
True
Aerobic respiration equation is?
Glucose + oxygen ➡ co2 + water + energy
The energy released during respiration may be used to what?
Build larger molecules, maintains a steady body temperature , build amino acids and other nutrients
Muscles store what?
Glucose and glycogen, which can be converted back to glucose for use during exercise
