Proteins Flashcards
Where are many proteins found?
in plants and animals
Similar to starch what are proteins?
natural condensation polymers
What is the essential element required for the formation of proteins in plants and animals?
nitrogen
What role do proteins play in the body?
they are a major structural material of animal tissue (muscle, tendons, skin, nails and hair).
When do proteins form?
when many amino acid monomers react together in a condensation polymerisation ration.
How can you identify an amino acid?
amino acids have 2 different functional groups, the carboxyl and amine group
Some of the amino acids required can be made in the body, but others have to be present in dietary protein. What are these amino acids known as?
essential amino acids
What is formed when amino acid join together?
peptide link
During digestion, what happens to proteins?
they are broken down by hydrolysis
What does the hydrolysis of proteins produce?
amino acids
What can proteins be classified as?
fibrous or globular
Describe fibrous proteins?
they are long and thin and are the major structural material of animal tissue
Give 2 examples of fibrous proteins?
keratin (hair/nails) and collagen (muscles)
Describe globular proteins?
spiral chains folded into compact units.
What are globular proteins involved in?
maintenance and regulation of life processes
