Proteins Flashcards
Cell biology
Describe the formation and function of proteins
The shape and function of a protein comes from its specific sequence of amino acids.
Proteins have many functions within the body a few examples are:
Structural proteins (membranes)
Enzymes
Hormones
Antibodies
Receptors
Describe a catalyst, naming a biological catalyst
catalyst will:
Speed up a chemical reaction
Remain chemically unchanged after the reaction
Lower the activation energy needed for the reaction to occur.
All living cells produce biological catalysts to speed up cellular reactions.
A biological catalyst is called an ENZYME.
Describe conditions which affect enzyme activity
Enzymes and other proteins are affected by temperature and pH
certain conditions an enzyme can become denatured
