proteins Flashcards
what are enzymes
enzymes are biological catalysts made of proteins which are found in all living cells
what is an enzymes role
to speed up the rate of chemical reactions while remaining unchanged at the end
why is an enzyme said to be specific
they are specific because only one enzyme can bind with one substrate
what is an active site of the enzyme
the active site is specific and complemetary to the shape of the substrate
what is a degredation reaction
larger substrate - reaction occurs - two smaller products
what is a synthesis reaction
smaller substrate - reaction occurs - a larger product
what is meant by the term optimum
these are the conditions at which an enzyme is most active
what are the two conditions which can affect enzyme activity
temperature
pH
what is a chromosome
structures found in the nucleus made from DNA which contains genes
what does it mean when an enzyme is denatured
when the shape of the active site is permanently changed
controlled variable
variable being kept the same to ensure a fair experiment
dependant variable
the variable being measured to obtain results
independant variable
the variable being changed in the experiment
