What are High Biological value proteins?
Proteins containing all the essential amino acids we need to survive
Sources of HBV proteins
Most animal products, soya beans and quinoa
What are Low Biological value proteins?
Proteins missing one or more essential amino acids
Sources of LBV proteins
Plant sources e.g. peas, lentils, nuts, seed and most beans
What is protein complementation?
Combining two or more sources of LBV protein to provide all essential amino acids.
How much protein do an average man and an average woman need?
Average man= 55g
Average woman= 45g
Who requires more protein?
- Growing children
- Physically active people
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
What are the effects of an excess of protein?
Puts the liver and the kidneys under pressure, which can be dangerous
What are the effects of protein deficiency?
- Stunted growth, especially in children
- Weak immune system
- Oedema (swelling)
- Struggling to digest food properly
- Hair, skin and nails degenerating
- May cause Kwashiorker, which is characterised by swelling around the abdomen
