Protein digestion & Lipid Absoprtion Flashcards
Outline the digestion of proteins.
In the stomach, endopeptidase hydrolyses bonds between central region of protein to form small polypeptides. In the small intestine, they’re further hydrolysed to terminal amino acids by exopeptidase enzymes to form dipeptides. Dipeptidase in the cell surface membrane hydrolyse dipeptides to amino acids.
Outline lipid absorption
Gall bladder secretes bile salts into small intestine, emulsifying & increasing SA. Lipase released from the pancreas hydrolyses lipids into fatty acids and monoglycerides and the bile salts, monoglycerides and fatty acids form micelles. The micelles make contact with the epithelial cell and release the monoglycerides & fatty acids, where they’re absorbed as non-polar. Triglycerides are formed at ER and associate with cholesterol and lipoproteins to form chylomicrons which transport lipids and leave cell through exocytosis and enter lacteals and later the blood capillaries.
