Protein Flashcards
What is the left side of chemicals of an amino acid structure called?
Amino group.
What is the basic chemical structure of protein?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen.
What is the right side of chemicals of an amino acid structure called?
Carboxyl group.
What are the essential amino acids of the average child?
Arginine and Histidine.
What are the essential amino acids of the average adult?
Leucine and Isoleucine.
What is the reaction when a peptide link in an amino acid is formed?
Condensation reaction.
What is a polypeptide link?
A chain of linked amino acids.
What is the biological value of protein?
The measure of protein quality in foods.
E.g. The amount of essential amino acids in the food.
List five HBV food sources.
Eggs, milk, meat, fish and soybeans.
What is meant by foods that compliment each other?
If a food is low in one amino acid but high in another, and visa versa for another food, when eaten together they give the body high amounts of both amino acids.
List five sources of protein.
Cheddar cheese, lean beef, soybean, peanuts and wholemeal bread.
What is the Recommended Daily Allowance?
It is the recommended amount of protein a person should have each day.
How much protein should one have per day?
The RDA depends on the weight of the person. If they weigh 70kg, they have to eat 70g of protein per day.
How does the stomach digest protein?
It contains rennin and pepsin.
Rennin works on caesinogen to create caesin.
Pepsin works on protein to create peptones.
How does the pancreas digest protein?
It contains trypsin.
Trypsin works on the remaining protein to create peptones.
