What are essential amino acids?
Essential Amino acids are amino acids that the body can’t produce so we have to get them from the food we eat
What does HBV stand for?
High Biological Value and are foods that have all the amount of amino acids you need in them
What are some sources for a HBV foods?
Meat, fish, dairy, eggs, soya, quinoa
What does LBV stand for?
Low Biological Value and are foods that have 7 or less amino acids in them
How many essential amino acids do you need a day?
Adults- 8
Children- 8 plus a bit more
What are some sources for a LBV food?
Beans, Pulses, nuts, seeds, cereals
What is protein complementation?
When 2 or more proteins are mixed together to get a high Biological Value
What are some examples of Protein Complementation?
Beans on toast, rice and kidney beans, Dahl with flatbread, rice and peas, Humous and pitta bread
What are some Protein Alternatives?
Soya, Mycoprotein, Quinoa
