Q

Name and describe the functions of protzoan nuclei

A

Micronucleus - The smaller nucleus is diploid and involved in genetic recombination during reproduction and regeneration of the macronucleus.

Macronucleus - The larger nucleus controls everyday functions of the cell. It is concerned with trophic activities i.e it reacts to stimuli and regeneration

Q

Explain cysts in relation to protazoa

A

Cysts can be distinguished by the presence of a cell wall and low metabolic activity. They are a dormant form of the protazoa, formed in reaction to adverse enviromental conditions. They are sights of cell divison and nucelar reorganization and can transfer between hosts in parasitic species

Q

Explain the term pellicle

A

Pellicle refers to the cell membrane and the thin layer of material beneath the cell membrane which provide the form and shape of the protazoa

Q

Explain the difference between protazoan endoplasm and protazoan ectoplasm

A

The endoplasm is the central part of the protazoan whilst the ectoplasm is a semi-fliud superficial layer around the protazoan granting rigidity to the cell.

Q

Describe 3 organelles which can grant locomotion to a protazoa.

A

Flagella - are long filamentous whip like strucutre composed of microtubules
Cilia - Short, hair like structures which are numerous and arranged in rows
Pseudopodia - Temporary extensions of the cell membrane and cytoplasm formed by the streaming of ectoplsm and endoplasm. They can attach and dettach from surfaces to allow the cell to move
