Protazoa Flashcards
Protozoa are _____ _______ organisms
Protozoa are eukaryotic uniceullular organisms
Name the 3 different vacuoles found within a prozoan cell
Food vacuoles, secretory vacuoles and contraction vacuoles.
Name and describe the functions of protzoan nuclei
Micronucleus - The smaller nucleus is diploid and involved in genetic recombination during reproduction and regeneration of the macronucleus.
Macronucleus - The larger nucleus controls everyday functions of the cell. It is concerned with trophic activities i.e it reacts to stimuli and regeneration
Explain cysts in relation to protazoa
Cysts can be distinguished by the presence of a cell wall and low metabolic activity. They are a dormant form of the protazoa, formed in reaction to adverse enviromental conditions. They are sights of cell divison and nucelar reorganization and can transfer between hosts in parasitic species
Explain the term pellicle
Pellicle refers to the cell membrane and the thin layer of material beneath the cell membrane which provide the form and shape of the protazoa
Explain the difference between protazoan endoplasm and protazoan ectoplasm
The endoplasm is the central part of the protazoan whilst the ectoplasm is a semi-fliud superficial layer around the protazoan granting rigidity to the cell.
Describe 3 organelles which can grant locomotion to a protazoa.
Flagella - are long filamentous whip like strucutre composed of microtubules
Cilia - Short, hair like structures which are numerous and arranged in rows
Pseudopodia - Temporary extensions of the cell membrane and cytoplasm formed by the streaming of ectoplsm and endoplasm. They can attach and dettach from surfaces to allow the cell to move
By which process to ameboza reproduce
Binary fission
By which process do euglenazoa reproduce
Longitudinal binary fission
By which process do cilliates reproduce
Asexually by transverse binary fission and sexually by conjugation
Which organisms have complex life cycles with alternating asexual and sexual stages.
Sporozoa
A protazoa that can inhabit the human body
Toxoplasma gondii is a protazoa which can inhabit he human body via parasitic infection. Toxoplasma causes causes the disease toxoplasmosis in human hosts and is transmitted through cat faeces.
Describe a detrimental protazoa
Toxoplasma gondii is a protazoa which can inhabit he human body via parasitic infection. Toxoplasma causes causes the disease toxoplasmosis in human hosts and is transmitted through cat faeces.
A protazoa found in soil
Dictyostelium discoideum is a ameoba like slime mould found in soil where it grazes on bacteria found there. It has benefited the scientific community as it has been used to study cell movement.
A protazoa found in water
Paramecium are found in freshwater where the use there cilia for locomotion.
