Prosthetic training Flashcards
What K level is this
does not have the ability or potential to ambulate or transfer safely with or without assistance and a prosthesis does no enhance quality of life or mobility
K 0
what K level is this
has the ability or potential for transfers or ambulation in level surfaces at a fixed cadence. Typically of the limited and unlimited household ambulator
K1
What K level is this
has the ability or potential for ambulation with the ability to transverse low-level environment barriers such as curbs, stair,s or uneven surfaces. Typical of the limited community ambulator
K2
What K level is this
has the ability or potential for ambulation with variable cadence/ Typical or the community ambulator who has the ability to transverse most environmental barriers and may vocational, therapeutic or exercise activity that demands prosthetic use beyond simple locomottion
K3
what K level is this
has the ability or potential for prosthetic ambulation that exceeds basic ambulation skills, exhibiting high impact, stress or energy levels. Typical of the prosthetic demands of the child, active adult or athlete
K4
Prosthetic socks
- prosthetic socks available in differnet thickness
- limb volume can fluctuate in early weeks, months after surgery
- number of sock ply can vary from day to day
- patient should wear compression until ready to don prosthesis
- optimal prosthetic fit is snug
Prosthetic sock: too few
- residual limb descends too far into socket
- pistoning during ambulation
Prosthetic socks: too many
- prosthetic difficulty to don
- prosthetic fits too tightly
- prosthetic leg too long during gait
- may also see pistoning during ambulation
pistoning
- prosthetic moves on resdisual limb
- residual limb lifts out of socket during swing
- residual limb pushes into socket during stance
- outcome: affects foot clearnace, creates shear that can lead to skin issues
residual limb skin problems
- prevention and management
- impact on functioning in daily life
- primary causes: pressure, friction, shearing
- expect: erythema over WB areas, blanches/returns to normal skin coloration after 10 minutes
- signs of tissue damage: non-blancing erythema, does not return to normal skin coloration
Prosthetic gait training challenges
- increase WB tolerance
- controlling dynamic WS through prosthesis in all planes
- postural control without motor and sensory contribution from all distal joints
initial gait activities
- static standing with progressively less UE support
- dynamic WS, multiple dirrerctions, feet in different positions
- standing reaching
- stepping with remaining limb
- step onto stool with remain limb
- gait training to address gait devations
- sit to stand
Advanced gait activities
- changing cadence in response to environmentals needs
- sidestepping, turning, walking backward
- cross street
- on/off elevator, escalator
- walking in crowded hallway
- accessing seat in theatre
- steps, curbs, ramps, uneven terrain
function activities
- picking up objects from floor
- kneeling
- floor to stand
- job related activities
- recreation-related activities
