Propulsion System Flashcards
State the 4 stroke engine cycle. (State process of each stroke and whether inlet & outlet is open/closed)
Intake: Compression: Inlet closed, Outlet closed Piston moves Combustion: Exhaust:
Describe the Intake stroke of the 4 stroke engine cycle.
Inlet open, Outlet closed
Piston moves downwards to BDC, forms vacuum, causes the intake to enter
Describe the Compression stroke of the 4 stroke engine cycle.
Inlet closed, Outlet closed
Piston moves upwards to TDC (top dead centre)
Describe the Combustion stroke of the 4 stroke engine cycle.
Inlet closed, outlet closed Fuel is injected into the chamber Fuel, O2, heat required for combustion All 3 conditions met, combustion occurs Energy is released Combustion causes piston to move and then moves the shaft
Describe the Exhaust stroke of the 4 stroke engine cycle.
Exhaust valve opens, remaining exhaust leaves through the exhaust pipe
State the purpose of engine block
To hold all the valve components of the engine
State the purpose of the engine shaft
to transmit energy from one rotating member to another supported by it or connected to it
State the purpose of the crank shaft
Converts linear motion to rotational motion
State the purpose of the connecting rod
connects piston to crankshaft, converts linear motion of the piston to rotational motion of the crankshaft
State the purpose of the piston and the piston ring
Piston: Converts heat energy into mechanical work/energy, key to carrying out 4-stroke diesel cycle
Piston ring: To keep the combustion chamber gas-tight
State the purpose of the piston and the piston ring
Piston: Converts heat energy into mechanical work/energy, key to carrying out 4-stroke diesel cycle
Piston ring: To keep the combustion chamber gas-tight
State the purpose of the cylinder head
holds the fuel injectors and valves(inlet outlet), seals the top of the cylinder block to form combustion chamber
State the purpose of the rocker arm
transmitting the movement of the camshaft towards the intake and exhaust valves of the engine
State the purpose of the camshaft
converts rotational motion to linear motion, controls opening and closing of inlet, outlet valves
State the purpose of the flywheel
to store rotational energy/maintains the initial momentum to keep the propeller moving
