Proprioception Flashcards
What receptors are involved in proprioception?
Muscle Spindles
Golgi tendon organs
Joint Receptors
What is proprioception?
A branch of mechanoreception - awareness of self position
What are the muscle fibres otherwise called?
Extrafusal fibres
What are the muscle spindles otherwise called?
Intrafusal fibres
Where are the intrafusal fibres in relation to the extrafusal fibres?
Intrafusal fibres are within the extrafusal fibres
What motor nerve type supply extrafusal fibres?
alpha motor!
What motor nerve type supply the contractile portion of intrafusal fibres?
gamma motor!
What increases spindle activity?
stretch the afferent fibres of the muscle spindle
If we want to contract muscle where do we send signal?
To alpha AND gamma - to maintain the spindle tension!! Alpha-gamma co-activation
What do the primary afferent nerve fibres of the muscle spindle detect? (WRAPPED SPIRALLED AROUND)
detects length of fibres and speed of change of length
What do the secondary afferent nerve fibres of the muscle spindle detect? (FLOWER SPRAY)
detects length of fibres
Where are the cell bodies of the muscle spindles?
Trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus
Where are the synapses of the muscle spindles?
Trigeminal motor nucleus
What is the role of the muscle spindles?
maintain muscle length
load compensation
role of pacinian corpuscle in joint ligament?
acceleration
