Proporties Of Matter Flashcards
What are the different states of Matter?
Gas, Liquid and Solid
What is it called when a solid is turned into a gas?
Sublimation
What is it called when a gas is turned into a solid?
Deposition
What is it called when a solid is turned into a liquid?
Melting
What is it called when a liquid is turned into a solid?
Solidification
What is it called when a liquid is turned into a gas?
Evaporation
What is it called when a gas is turned into a liquid?
Condensation
What is a melting point?
The melting point of a substance is the temperature that it turns from a solid to a liquid.
What is a boiling point?
The temperature when a liquid turns to a gas.
What is hardness?
A substances ability to resist being scratched
What is malleability?
The substances ability to be turned into sheets
What is Ductility?
The substances ability to be turned into a wire.
What is crystal shape?
When a substance is shaped like a crystal.
What is solubility?
The substances ability to be dissolved into water.
What is density?
The amount of mass in a given volume of a substance.
What is conductivity?
The substances ability to conduct energy or heat.
What is physical change?
When the substances appearance or state may be altered, but it’s composition stays the same.
What are some quantitative physical properties?
Thing we can actually measure with numerical value. Examples; melting point, boiling point, hardness, density, conductivity and viscosity.
What are some qualitative physical properties?
Things we can’t measure but that we can observe. Examples; malleability, ductility, crystal shape, color, texture, taste, smell, state, lusture
What is chemical change?
Always results in the formation of a different substance or substances.
What is a pure substance?
Made of only one kind of matter and has a unique set of properties that make it different.
What is an element?
It is a material that cannot be broken down into any simpler substance.
What is a compound?
When two or more elements combine chemically.
What is a mixture?
A mixture is a combination of pure substances but they do not mix chemically.
What is a mechanical mixture?
The different substances that make it are visible.
Ex: salsa
What is a solution?
The different substances that make it are not separately visible.
Ex: sugar in coffee
What is a suspension?
A cloudy mixture in which tiny parts are held within another. The particles are easily separated.
What is a colloid?
Cloudy with tiny parts as well, but the particles are so small, they cannot be easily separated from the other substance.
