Q

how is Propofol administered on a patient when used for conscious sedation

A

Propofol is used with a patient-controlled electronic infusion pump driver so that it can be continually administered. the pump driver is set up by the clinicians or the anaesthetist by inputting the amount of drugs a patient will receive each time they press a button and the interval period between activations. This means that the patient is in control, because they hold the button throughout the treatment, which when pressed will administer a dose of Propofol, Due to the date input, they would not receive a dose every time they pressed the button, because of the lock-out time. The initial bolus is approximately 1mg/kg over 1-5minutes followed by 1.5-4.5mg/kg/hour
