Define property
Property includes everything animate or inanimate capable of being the subject of ownership
What to do if property is missing or unaccounted for
Immediately notify supervisor, divisional inspector or duty officer
Submit a report forthwith
What to do with perishable property if you know the owner
Return to owner at the time if possible
Needs to be recorded in misc property book, be photographed, and need to get written authority with a signature from the owner for destruction
Will need a disposal of valueless misc property form
What to do with perishable property if owner is unknown or not able to prove signature
The relevant inspector can authorise the destruction
If it’s classed as valueless the inspector has the authority to have it destroyed
Will need a disposal of valueless misc property form
When do you use a field receipt
In field prior to formally recording the property in appropriate book at the station

Check Find my
Notify phone provider to lock phone
Cancel credit cards/check bank account
Check with other stations
What to do if someone comes in about missing lost property
Complete a lost property form and email TRIM or internal mail to OIS
Provide copy to RP for insurance purposes and their record
What to do if someone brings in found property
Check property in the presence of the person
Complete found property book and enter particulars
Provide receipt to finder
Advise finder they can claim after 3 months but before 4 months
White slip - handed to finder
Blue slip - attach to property
White - remains in book
Vehicles property
Motor vehicle seizure
Valuables to be taken out for safe keeping - enter into miscellaneous property book
White - place under wiper/ on the dash or on passenger seat
What is misc property
Property other than found or prisoner
Offer it can be stolen or suspected stolen or seized property from an offender
Money
The amount of money, the different quantities and TEEB reference number are to be on any field receipt issued
