Properties of water Flashcards
Adhesion
Occurs because of the polarity of water molecules and its ability to form hydrogen bonds.
Capillary
It is caused by the combination of adhesive and cohesive forces.
Cohesion
Surface Tension is caused by the Cohesive hydrogen bonding resting on an object trying to penetrate the surface of liquid water
High specific Heat Capacity
Hydrogen bonds restrict the motion of the water and require a large input of energy to break.
High Latent Heat Of Vaporisation
In order for matter to change state from a liquid to a gas, heat is required.
The evaporation has a cooling effect as a considerable amount of heat is used to break the hydrogen bonds.
Solvent
dissolves Polar/ unpolar molecules
Amphipathic
Molecules that are both Hydrophilic (water loving ) and Hydrophobic(water hating) .
Adhesive Force
refers to the attractive forces between unlike substance
Chromatography and adhesive force
the interaction between adhesive and cohesive forces
