Properties Of Water Flashcards
Which atom in the water molecule is positively charged?
Hydrogen
Which atom in the water molecule is negatively charged?
Oxygen
Describe the movement of the water molecules at cold temperatures
The movement in cold temperatures is very slow and not moving
Describe the movement of the water molecules at hot temperatures
The movement in hot temperatures is very fast and frantic
Why to water molecules easily bond together?
The positive and negative charges bond together to make water molecules
what type of chemical bond exists between two water molecules?
Hydrogen bonds
What is the difference between adhesion and cohesion?
Adhesion is when water sticks to other substances while cohesion is when water sticks to each other/itself
What is Adhesion?
When water molecules stick to another substance
What is Cohesion?
When water molecules stick to only itself
Describe surface tension
Surface tension is the property allowing liquid to resist external force
How does water behave when it freezes, why?
When frozen water expands to become less dense. Water does this because the hydrogen bonds are separated just enough to make it less dense
What is specific heat?
A measurement of heat that needs to be lost or absorbed
Why is the property of specific heat important to aquatic life?
It absorbs a lot of heat without changing temperature
Why can’t water dissolve oil?
Water can’t dissolve oil because oil is non-polar while water is polar
What is the capillary effect and what causes it?
The Capillary Effect is the movement of a liquid along the surface of a solid caused by the attraction of molecules of the liquid to the molecules of the solid. The Capillary Effect is caused by cohesion and adhesion.
