Properties of Water Flashcards
Study and Memorize
Changes of Water
At 0 degrees Celsius water becomes a solid.
At 100 degrees Celsius water becomes a gas.
Facts about particles
All particles are in constant, random motion.
The amount of movement a particle has is determined by the amount of energy it has.
Fact about Molecules
As energy is transferred away from, or to these molecules, the state of matter may change.
Particles in states of matter
All the particles in a solid, liquid, or gas are the same, what changes is the amount of energy.
Solid have a low amount of energy: vibrate.
Solids are incompressible. Amorphous solid
There is no free space.
Facts about liquids and gases.
Liquids are incompressible. No free space
Gases have a lot of energy, move quickly, and can be compresses, because there is a lot of free space.
H and O
The O = Negative (O‾)
The H = Positive (H+)
Unequal charge = Polar
Formation of Hydrogen bonds in water
Water has a variety of unusual properties because of attraction between these polar molecules.
Hydrogen bonds are weak. Easy to make and break.
They are fickle = can’t make up their mind always looking for friends.
Formation of Hydrogen bonds in water Part 2.
Hydrogen bonds exist between water molecules.
Weak Hydro 1/20th
Fact about hydrogen bond
The slightly negative regions of one molecule are attracted to the slightly positive regions of nearby molecules, forming a hydrogen bond.
How many water molecules can form hydrogen bonds.
Each water molecule can form a maximum of 4 hydrogen bonds.
The hydrogen bonds joining water molecules are weak, about 1/20th as strong as covalent bonds.
Facts about water
68% of our bodies are made of water.
55% of our blood is water.
Water is involved in the creation of every organic compound.
Results of Hydrogen Bonds.
Extraordinary Properties that are a result of hydrogen:
- Cohesive behavior
- Resist changes in temperature
- High heat of evaporation
- Expands when it freezes
Water unique properties
Its unique properties are due in great part to hydrogen bonds and polarity.
