Properties of Water Flashcards
What is a polar molecule?
slight charge difference between one end of a molecule to the other
2 properties of hydrogen bonds
weak and fleeting (short-lived)
High viscosity meaning
water is sticky
High SHC meaning
lots of energy required to heat 1kg of water by 1 degree
Why does water have a high SHC?
many hydrogen bonds to overcome
High density meaning
less dense as liquid than solid (unique to water)
Why does ice have a low density?
water molecules align themselves in a structure less dense than water due to polarity
Good solvent meaning
dissolves and transports
Why is water a good solvent?
polarity of water allows solute to separate & attract respective - and + parts of molecule
Adhesion/capillary effect of water
soaking up of water through a substance due to adhesion
High latent heat of vaporisation meaning
lots of energy required to change water from liquid to gas
Why does water have a high latent heat of vaporisation?
many hydrogen bonds to overcome
Cohesion/surface tension of water
drop of water doesn’t spread out
Why is water cohesive?
hydrogen bonding between molecules pulls them together
