Properties of the halogens Flashcards
What state is chlorine in at RTP?
Gas
What state is bromine in at RTP?
Liquid
What state is iodine in at RTP?
Solid
What does chlorine look like at RTP?
Green gas
What does bromine look like at RTP?
Brown, volatile liquid
What does iodine look like at RTP?
Dark grey solid
What are the hazards with chlorine?
It is toxic
What are the hazards with bromine?
It is corrosive and toxic
What are the hazards with iodine?
Toxic vapour formed when heated
What is the trend in boiling points?
It increases down the group
What is reason for the trend in BP down group 7?
Molecules further down the group have more electrons so London forces are stronger between molecules therefore more energy is required to break the intermolecular forces
What is the trend in atomic radii?
It increases down the group
What is the reason for the trend in AR down group 7?
Atoms further down the group have more electron shells so there is more electron shielding therefore the nuclear attraction on the outer electrons is weak, resulting in larger atoms.
What is electronegativity?
The measure of the attraction of an atom for the bonded pair of electrons in a covalent bond
What is the trend in electronegativity?
It decreases don the group
