properties of structures Flashcards
What is the melting point of a ionic lattice structure?why?
high due to strong attractions between negative and positive ions.
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved in water?
Yes when they are dissolved in water, the two elements split apart so there are positive and negative ions. This means the ions are able to move so electricity can can be conducted.
What is the melting point of a simple molecules? Why?
Has a low melting point because there are week forces between the molecules
Do simple molecules conduct electricity?
No because the monocle is neutral
What is the melting point of a giant covalent structure?why?
very high due to VERY strong bonds between elements
Do giant covalent structures conduct electricity?
Graphite is the only giant covalent structure that can conduct electricity because it has delocalised electrons
Do metallic structures conduct electricity?
yes because the have delocalised electrons
What is the melting point of a metallic structures?why?
high because there are strong attractions between positive metal ions and negative delocalised electrons
