PROPERTIES of Particles Flashcards
Explain Solids.
The atoms are confined into a DEFINITE shape or SIZE because of how TIGHTLY packed the atoms are in the solid.
Can solids flow?
No, Solids cannot flow because there molecules are tightly packed closely together, they vibrate in a fixed position.
Describe the properties of Solids?
Arrangement of Particles: PACKED TIGHTLY, PACKED TOGETHER IN ROWS AND COLUMNS
Kinetic Energy of particles: VERY LITTLE KINETIC ENERGY AS PARTICLES VIBRATE IN FIXED POSITIONS.
Shape: DEFINITE SHAPE
Volume: DEFINITE VOLUME
Density: HIGH DENSITY
Compressibility: CANNOT BE COMPRESSED
Fluidity: CANNOT FLOW
Describe the properties of Liquids?
Arrangement of Particles: PARTICLES ARE SLIGHTLY APART & EXIST IN ROWS AND COLUMNS
Kinetic Energy of particles: MODERATE KINETIC ENERGY AS PARTICLES EXIST IN CLUSTERS & SLIDE OVER EACH OTHER.
Shape: NO DEFINITE SHAPE
Volume: DEFINITE VOLUME
Density: HIGH TO MEDIUM DENSITY
Compressibility: CANNOT BE COMPRESSED
Fluidity: CAN FLOW
Describe the properties of Gases?
Arrangement of Particles: PARTICLES ARE VERY FAR APART & MOVE RAPIDLY AND RANDOMLY
Kinetic Energy of particles: VERY HIGH KINETIC ENERGY AS PARTICLES MOVE VERY FAST
Shape: NO DEFINITE SHAPE
Volume: NO DEFINITE VOLUME
Density: LOW DENSITY
Compressibility: CAN BE COMPRESSED
Fluidity: CAN FLOW
