Properties of Matters Flashcards
Anything with mass and occupies space
Matter
Matter is anything that has mass and can be observed through their properties and changes.
Macroscopic
Composed of unimaginably small particles called atoms that retain the chemical identity of the element they represent
Microscopic
Chemical symbols, formula, and
equations
Symbolic
Permanent properties of substances
Intrinsic
Qualities that describe the outside appearance of matter
Extrinsic
Do not depend on the amount of material
present
Intensive
Depends on the amount of material present
Extensive
Can be measured without changing composition
Physical Properties
Can result to a change in composition
Chemical Properties
Conservation of Mass
Matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction
Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed although energy can assume many
different forms that are inter-convertible
is any substance, regardless of its form that can potentially cause physical and health hazards to people, or can result in harm to the environment
Chemical Hazard
has a fixed shape and volume. may be hard or soft, rigid or flexible.
Solid
has a varying shape that conforms to the shape of the container, but a fixed volume. has an upper surface.
Liquid
has no fixed shape or volume and therefore does not have a surface.
Gas
the simplest type of substance with unique physical and chemical properties.
Consists of only one type of atom
Element
a structure that consists of two or more atoms that are chemically bound together and thus behaves as an independent unit.
Molecule
a substance composed of two or more elements which are chemically combined
Compound
a group of two or more elements and/or compounds that are physically intermingled.
Mixture
has one or more visible boundaries between the components.
Heterogeneous Mixture
has no visible boundaries because the components are mixed as individual atoms, ions, and molecules.
also known as Solution
Homogeneous Mixture
