Properties Of Matter Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Solid
Has a definite volume and a definite shape
Liquid
Has a definite volume but not a definite shape and is able to take the shape of its container
Gas
Does not have either a definite volume or shape and it takes both the volume and shape of its container
Property
A special quality or features that identifies something
Texture
How the surface of something looks and feels
Temperature
The measure of the energy of motion in particles of matter which we feel as how hot or cold something is
Volume
The amount of space something takes up
Mass
The amount of matter in something
Physical change
A change in which the form or shape changes but the substance still has the same properties
Chemical change
A change in one or more substances caused by reaction the forms new and different substances
Reaction
The process in which new substances are formed during a chemical change
Mixture
A combination of two or more different substances in which the substances keep their identity
Solution
A liquid mixture in which all of the parts are mixed evenly
Dissolve
To break up into particles in a liquid that are so tiny they can’t even be seen with a microscope
Surface area
The size of the outside of a 3-D shape measured in square units
Atom
The smallest unit into which an element can be divided and still have all the properties of that element
Atomic theory
A scientific explanation of the structure of atoms and how they interact with other atoms
Element
Matter that is made of only one kind of atom
Compound
Substance made of two or more different atoms that have combined chemically
