Q

What are the different types of properties ?

A
  1. physical - measured w/o changing identity and composition. ex: color, odor, denisty,
  2. chemical properties - substance may change or react to form other substances.

Q

What are the two types of chemical properties?

A
  • intensive - amount doesnt matter
  • extensive- depend on quantity of the sample and include measurement of mass and volume

Q

Distillation

A
  1. is a process in which a mixture of liquids or liquids and solids can be separated by its boiling points
  2. salt water - boil the salt water and only the water forms vapor.
  3. petroleum liquids - each one has a different boiling point. gasoline has the lowest therefore, it will evaporate first.

Q

filtration

A
  1. process that separates the solid and liquids parts of mixture
  2. EX: take a piece of filter paper. put a mixture of sand and water on top of the paper. the liquid goes throught the filter paper while the sand remains on the top.

Q

Chromatography

A
  1. way to separate different molecules in a mixture.
  2. ex: put a drop from a mixture of amino acids near one end of the chromatography paper. put the end of the paper in a solvent like alchol. different molecules in the amino acids mixture move different distances up the paper, separating the molecules in the mixture
