Properties of Matter Flashcards
1
Q
Properties
A
characteristics that allows us to recognize and distinguish other substances
2
Q
What are the different types of properties ?
A
- physical - measured w/o changing identity and composition. ex: color, odor, denisty,
- chemical properties - substance may change or react to form other substances.
3
Q
What are the two types of chemical properties?
A
- intensive - amount doesnt matter
- extensive- depend on quantity of the sample and include measurement of mass and volume
4
Q
Physical change
A
- appearance changes but composition doesnt
- changes of state ex: water
5
Q
chemical changes/ reactions
A
- substance is transformed into a chemically different substance
- ex: hydrogen burns in air to form water
6
Q
Distillation
A
- is a process in which a mixture of liquids or liquids and solids can be separated by its boiling points
- salt water - boil the salt water and only the water forms vapor.
- petroleum liquids - each one has a different boiling point. gasoline has the lowest therefore, it will evaporate first.
7
Q
filtration
A
- process that separates the solid and liquids parts of mixture
- EX: take a piece of filter paper. put a mixture of sand and water on top of the paper. the liquid goes throught the filter paper while the sand remains on the top.
8
Q
Chromatography
A
- way to separate different molecules in a mixture.
- ex: put a drop from a mixture of amino acids near one end of the chromatography paper. put the end of the paper in a solvent like alchol. different molecules in the amino acids mixture move different distances up the paper, separating the molecules in the mixture
