Properties of Matter Flashcards
Diffusion
How easily one substance is able to move through another.
Exothermic
The container feels warmer, heat it released. (exo=out, therm=heat)
Endothermic
The container feels cooler, heat is absorbed. (Endo=in, therm=heat)
Intermolecular Forces
Between molecules
Intramolecular forces
Within molecules. (Ionic and covalent bonds involving electrons)
Elastic Collision
Gas particles collide with the sides of the container, and exerts a force.
This is gas pressure.
Kinetic molecular theory
Explains why matter behaves as it does. •particles that make matter are small •there are spaces between particles •particles are in constant motion •there are forces of attraction between particles
Evaporation
Liquid particles on the surface have enough energy to over come IMFs
Condensation
g)-(l
Kinetic energy of the particles decrease as it cools. Particles slowdown, IMFs take hold. Energy released (Exothermic) to surroundings.
Plasma
A gaseous mixture of positive ions and electrons.
99% of all matter is plasma
Rare on Earth (ie. aurora borealis, stars, lightning, lightning bolts)
