Properties of Matter Flashcards
matter
anything that has mass and takes up space
energy
the ability to do work
classify
group together based on similar traits
physical state
the classification of matter as a solid, liquid, or gas
solid
a state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume
liquid
a state of matter that has a definite volume but does not have a definite shape. Liquid
takes the shape of its container.
gas
a state of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume. Gas expands to fill its
container.
mass
the amount of matter in an object or substance
volume
the amount of space that an object or substance takes up
density
a measurement that describes how mass is packed into volume
An object that sinks displaces an amount of fluid equal to the object’s volume.
This is called displacement.
When we compare the densities of different materials or objects, this is called relative density.
For example iron is more dense than water. If something is more dense, it will sink. If something is
less dense, it will float.
property
a characteristic of a substance
physical property
a property that can be observed, measured, or changed without changing
the substance itself
dissolve
to spread out evenly in a liquid
solubility
a measure of how much of one substance will dissolve in another substance
thermal/heat energy
This is the energy of moving particles in a substance.
