Properties of Matter Flashcards
Matter
anything that has a mass or volume
solid
a substance with a definite shape and volume
liquid
a substance that has a definite volume, but not a definite shape
gas
a substance that does not have a definite shape or volume
volume
the amount of space something takes up
mass
measurement (grams) of how much matter something has
properties of matter
characteristics of objects used to identify & organize matter with similarities and differences,
repel
resisting magnetic force or pull toward a metal object.
attract
drawing toward a metal object with a magnetic or pulling force
law of conservation of mass
when parts of an object have the same total mass as the mass of the entire object. For example: you measure an assembled toy structure & it has a mass of 23 grams. You disassemble the toy & measure each part separately. When you add the masses of the parts, the total would still be 23 grams, the same as the mass of the assembled toy
physical state
the classification of matter as a solid, liquid, or gas
physical change
when the size, shape, or state of matter changes, but the type of matter stays the same. Ex: an empty, plastic water bottle has a certain mass. If you crush the bottle, it still has the same mass
chemical change
when particles of an original substance rearrange to make a new substance & a new kind of matter is produced. Ex: burning wood- burning the wood changes the wood into ashes and gases
condensation
physical change in matter from a gas to a liquid.
evaporation
physical change of water from a liquid to a gas
