Q

Ionic compounds and giant lattices melting/boiling points

A

Ionic compounds are found as giant lattices and because of this, the strong electrostatic force or attraction between oppositely charged ions holds it together very tightly and results in a very high melting/boiling point.

Q

In Rutherford’s discovery- what did it mean that most alpha particles went through the foil?

A

This meant that most of the atom was empty space

Q

In Rutherford’s discovery- what did it mean that some particles were deflected?

A

Alpha particles are positive and if they are deflected it means that something in there is positively charged- the charge concentrated in the center (is the positive nucleus)
